Man kills friend over sh50 debt in kirinyaga

Residents of Mutitu village in Kirinyaga County are shocked after a man stabbed his friend over a sh50 debt. Deceased Jacob Maina died on the spot from injuries sustained on November 12, 2025. The suspect has been arrested and detained at Kerugoya police station.

The incident occurred in the evening of November 12, 2025, when Jacob Maina argued with his friend over a sh50 debt. The dispute escalated into a fight, with the friend drawing a knife and stabbing Maina in the chest. Maina collapsed and died on the spot from severe blood loss.

After the stabbing, the suspect fled and hid, but police tracked him down, arrested him, and detained him at Kerugoya police station for questioning. Residents expressed profound shock over the event, stating they never expected it to end in death. “We are still shocked because we didn't think such a tragedy would happen in our village over a sh50 debt. The suspect killed his close friend and deserves to face the law,” said Mary Wanjohi, a local resident.

Kirinyaga County Police Commander Nelson Taliti stated that the case is being treated as murder and assured the bereaved family that justice will be served. The incident has raised concerns among Mutitu villagers, highlighting the need to resolve minor disputes without resorting to violence.
