The film México 86, starring Diego Luna, screens from May 30 to June 3 in several independent venues in Mexico City and the State of Mexico, ahead of its Netflix debut on June 5.
Directed by Gabriel Ripstein, the film recounts the process of organizing the 1986 FIFA World Cup in Mexico. The lead character, played by Diego Luna, portrays an operator negotiating with political and sports figures to secure the hosting rights after Colombia withdrew.
Former Mexico national team player Hugo Sánchez criticized the movie. He said he viewed some clips and that the character does not match his own experiences. “Ya vi algunos cortos y realmente ni soy yo, ni he dicho, ni he hecho todo lo que va a hacer”, he stated.
Screenings take place at venues including Cinemanía, Cine La Linterna Mágica and CineSpot Tláhuac. The limited run serves as promotion ahead of the streaming release.
