The decisive goal was scored by Luis Romo in the 50th minute after South Korean goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu mishandled a shot from Raúl Jiménez. The result left Mexico with two wins and a clean sheet.
Mexican coach Javier Aguirre described the match as “a match to forget, but the result is to remember”. He noted that his team was patient and that the group lead is already secured before the final matchday.
Fans at the Zócalo Fan Fest criticized the pace of play, saying the team “plays very slow”. Despite this, Mexico will play the round of 16 at Estadio Ciudad de México.
Czechia and South Africa drew 1-1 in Atlanta, a result that left both teams with one point and outside the top two spots in the group.
