Public Security Minister Martín Arrau confirmed the government will present a national security strategy in the Senate in the coming days.

Arrau, who took office one week ago, said the plan has been developed for over a year in the Republican Party and was presented during José Antonio Kast’s campaign. The minister detailed that the National Council of Public Security will be convened and more than 20 bills will be sent with urgency, in addition to strengthening the Cuadrante Plan.

Subsecretary Andrés Jouannet addressed the controversy sparked by Arrau’s prior comments on the previous government’s National Security Policy. Jouannet noted that plans require personnel and mentioned a shortage of four thousand carabineros compared to the start of the prior administration, as well as fewer PDI officials.

Jouannet added that work is underway to incorporate Gendarmería into the Public Security Ministry through a task force with the Justice Ministry. Arrau stressed that effectiveness and support for law enforcement matter most.
