Mombasa governor appoints Raila's former bodyguard as security advisor

Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir has appointed Maurice Ogeta, longtime bodyguard of the late Raila Odinga, as a security advisor for the county. The appointment was announced on January 8, 2026, following approval by the Mombasa County Public Service Board. Ogeta protected Odinga for 18 years during perilous political periods.

Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir, also the deputy party leader of ODM, has announced the appointment of Maurice Ogeta as Advisor on Security Affairs in his executive office. Ogeta, who served as the close bodyguard to the late Raila Odinga for nearly 18 years, protected him during dangerous protests, travels, and periods of political tension in Kenya.

“I have today made appointments in the Executive Office of the Governor following the establishment of positions by the Mombasa County Public Service Board, in line with the provisions of the law,” Nassir said in an official statement. He added that Ogeta's appointment is based on his extensive experience in the security sector, including his service to Odinga until his final moments during treatment in India.

According to reports, Ogeta was present at Odinga's burial last October in Kang’o ka Jaramogi, Bondo, Siaya County. President William Ruto announced at the time that the government would offer Ogeta a state job in recognition of his loyalty, though it has not been formalized yet.

Additionally, Nassir announced the appointment of award-winning actor and artist Ken Ambani as Advisor on Creative Arts. Ambani, who served as minister for Public Service, Gender, Youth, and Sports until July 2025, will help revive the creative sector in Mombasa. “His expertise will assist us in growing the arts for the benefit of artists, youth, and the economy,” Nassir stated.

The appointment is expected to address key security issues in the county, drawing on Ogeta's local, regional, and international experience.
