The original Nintendo Switch 2 launched in June 2025 but drew criticism for short battery life. Reviewer Tom shared after intensive use: "I've been using the Switch 2 for about a week and a half, playing it for multiple hours every day. Aside from the fact that I've had a lot of fun with Mario Kart World and Fast Fusion, my main take away from that time is that I wish the battery lasted longer."
Nikkei reports that the new European model enables safe, user-performed battery replacement without tools or professional service, complying with the EU's Right to Repair directive and Battery Regulation. No launch date has been announced, but similar changes could reach the US and Japan if regulations evolve.
Separately, Nintendo has released system software version 22.0.0 for the Switch 2 and original Switch, introducing features like Handheld Mode Boost for better performance on older games.
