President Gustavo Petro backed the decision by the Citizen Committee for the National Constituent Assembly to suspend signature collection. The move coincides with presidential candidate Iván Cepeda distancing himself from the proposal.
The president explained via his X account that the current priority is for citizens to democratically define the country's next government. He said high polarization requires focusing efforts on electoral participation and consensus around social reforms. Petro stated the assembly proposal arose to improve living conditions in work, pensions, public services and education. “The constituent assembly had no other objective than to improve the living conditions of the Colombian people,” he noted. Presidential candidate Iván Cepeda also distanced himself from the call, in line with the national government's abandonment of the idea. The suspension occurs amid citizen concerns over the initiative, according to press reports.
