Ring-tailed lemurs warm themselves at Japan Monkey Centre in Aichi

On Sunday, marking 'taisetsu' or the full arrival of winter by the traditional Chinese calendar, ring-tailed lemurs at the Japan Monkey Centre in Inuyama, Aichi Prefecture, gathered near an electric heater to warm up. Native to Madagascar, these lemurs are sensitive to cold weather, prompting the centre to install the heater in mid-November.

At the Japan Monkey Centre in Inuyama, Aichi Prefecture, ring-tailed lemurs were seen warming themselves beside an electric heater on Sunday, December 8, which aligns with 'taisetsu,' the traditional marker of winter's onset in the classical Chinese calendar.

These lemurs, originating from Madagascar, struggle with cold temperatures. To address this vulnerability, the centre installed the heater in mid-November, ensuring the animals remain comfortable as Japan's winter sets in.

The Japan Monkey Centre, dedicated to the conservation and display of various primates, implements such seasonal measures to safeguard its residents. This initiative not only protects the lemurs but also educates visitors on the needs of exotic species in temperate climates.
