Senate to review militarized academies regulation after Dafne Zapata death

Morena's Senate caucus will push for a review of the regulation governing private militarized academies in Mexico, following the death of teenager Dafne Zapata Quintos at a summer camp in Tamaulipas.

Senator Guadalupe Chavira de la Rosa said the Senate will examine the Reglamento para el Funcionamiento de las Academias Particulares de Tipo Militar, issued more than 80 years ago. The lawmaker noted that the rule no longer aligns with current legislation on children's rights and allows practices that endanger minors.

President Claudia Sheinbaum reiterated that the Academia Militarizada Marina Doenitz is a private institution and does not belong to the Secretaría de la Defensa Nacional. The Secretaría de Educación Pública clarified that militarized education is not authorized in basic education schools and is only provided in institutions of the armed forces and the National Guard.

The Tamaulipas Fiscalía is investigating the death of 13-year-old Dafne as alleged feminicidio by asphyxia due to submersion. A judge linked Danna Yanina ‘N’, 18, an auxiliary instructor at the academy, to the case; she will remain in preventive detention. The girl's mother, Alejandra Quintos, requested President Sheinbaum's intervention to clarify the facts.
