Sergeant Fannie Nkosi appears in court on new charges

Police have added fresh charges against Sergeant Fannie Nkosi for defeating and obstructing the course of justice. He appeared before the Thohoyandou Magistrates’ Court on Friday amid ongoing scrutiny over his links to a Tshwane security contract held by his brother.

The new charges stem from a 2022 case in Limpopo involving a suspect arrested for dagga possession, unlicensed firearms and explosives. National police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe said Nkosi allegedly fetched the case docket under false pretences, later removed confiscated dagga from custody and tampered with an exhibit bag.

Nkosi already faces multiple charges in Pretoria North Magistrates’ Court, including possession of unlicensed ammunition and theft. His bail was denied in April after police raided his home and found firearms, ammunition and R52,700 in cash.

His brother Bheki continues to hold a Tshwane security contract worth nearly R3-million through company Ngaphesheya, despite the matter being flagged by the Madlanga Commission. City manager Johann Mettler told Parliament this week that an internal investigation is ongoing.

Suspended Sergeant Fannie Nkosi of Gauteng’s Organised Crime Unit appeared in Pretoria North Magistrates’ Court on 7 April 2026, facing charges including possession of unlicensed ammunition and defeating the ends of justice. Police raided his home last week, finding firearms, cash and six undetected case dockets related to cash-in-transit robberies. His bail application was postponed to 13 April 2026.

In the latest update on suspended police sergeant Fannie Nkosi's case, the Pretoria North Magistrate’s Court will deliver its bail ruling on Wednesday, following his third appearance. Nkosi, facing charges of theft, defeating the ends of justice, and unlawful possession of ammunition and explosives, had his home raided earlier this month, leading to his arrest. This follows previous court postponements in the ongoing investigation.

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi has denied suspended Sedibeng District Police Commissioner Brigadier Abraham Nkhwashu's testimony that he requested police dockets—including for the April 2024 assassination of Vereeniging engineer Armand Swart—via Gauteng Police Commissioner Tommy Mthombeni. Lesufi's office called the claim misleading amid ongoing Madlanga Commission of Inquiry hearings into alleged probe interferences.
