Spotify acquires WhoSampled and expands song credits

Spotify has acquired the sample-sourcing website WhoSampled and launched a new feature called SongDNA to highlight song samples and covers. The platform is also expanding its song credits to include all contributors. WhoSampled will operate as a standalone brand.

Acquisition Details

Spotify announced the acquisition of WhoSampled, a popular website for tracking music samples, on November 19, 2025. The deal aims to integrate WhoSampled's database into Spotify's ecosystem while keeping the site independent. This move enhances Spotify's tools for music discovery and attribution.

New Features

Alongside the acquisition, Spotify introduced SongDNA, a feature that aggregates samples and covers using WhoSampled's data, providing users with deeper insights into song origins. The platform is also broadening its song credits, first rolled out in 2018, to now list all personnel involved, beyond just top performers, songwriters, and producers.

Spotify's Jacqueline Ankner stated, “Every song is a collaboration, and every contributor should be seen. With expanded Song Credits, SongDNA, and About the Song, we’re giving fans a deeper look at the people and creative threads behind the music they love and giving creators the recognition they deserve. It’s another step in Spotify’s work to champion the people, connections, and stories that bring every track to life.”

Broader Context

This announcement comes amid challenges for Spotify, including an exodus of artists protesting CEO Daniel Ek's investments through Prima Materia in defense tech like Helsing since 2021. Bands such as Massive Attack, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, and King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard have removed or plan to remove their music from the service.
