Spotify expands free managed accounts for kids

Spotify announced on Wednesday that parents on any subscription plan can now create free managed accounts for children under 13. The feature, previously limited to Premium Family users, is immediately available in the US, UK, France, Australia, Germany and the Netherlands.

Parents with any Spotify plan can set up the accounts through the app profile menu. The accounts provide personalized recommendations, playlists and the year-end Wrapped feature while blocking podcasts, videos and explicit content by default.

Safety settings prevent messaging and make profiles private and unsearchable. Parents can also block specific songs or artists and adjust content filters.

Spotify product lead Barry Nevin said the change removes the cost barrier and ensures equitable access for families. The company plans to roll out the option to additional markets including Canada, New Zealand and countries in Europe and Latin America.

Managed accounts were first introduced in 2024 for Premium Family subscribers and expanded to US users in October last year.

Что говорят люди

Initial reactions on X note Spotify expanding managed kid accounts to free users in select countries, praising accessibility and parental controls for under-13s. Some highlight benefits like separate profiles preventing algorithm interference and default safety settings. Others express skepticism that the move prioritizes household retention over genuine safety concerns. Posts from tech accounts and analysts dominate, with neutral to mildly positive tones and no strong negativity.
