Steelers name Mark Lovat new strength and conditioning coach

The Pittsburgh Steelers have added Mark Lovat as their new head strength and conditioning coach under head coach Mike McCarthy. Lovat brings prior NFL experience from the Green Bay Packers and Tennessee Titans. A recent interview highlighted his training philosophy focused on core principles and flexible methods.

Lovat previously worked as an assistant and head strength coach with McCarthy in Green Bay before joining the Titans in 2024 and 2025. His father, Tom Lovat, coached the Packers offensive line from 1992 to 1998 and worked with current Steelers offensive line coach James Campen.

Steelers.com reporter Teresa Varley interviewed Lovat about his approach. "I think you’ve got to stick to your principles," Lovat said. "That’s the number one thing. Once you know your principles, you stick to your principles."

The hire replaces Phil Matusz, whose methods drew criticism from players and were linked to injuries such as Russell Wilson’s calf issue in 2024. Lovat has begun working with players during the offseason program under CBA limits.

McCarthy and Lovat share a long professional history, and the team views the change as an upgrade in player preparation.
