Sudden storm hits Uppsala with hail and fallen trees

A powerful storm swept into Uppsala on Tuesday evening, bringing hail, strong winds and fallen trees. Emergency services received multiple alarms across the city.

The storm reached Uppsala shortly after 17.30 on Tuesday. Within seconds outdoor seating areas emptied as rain turned to hail.

Marcus Sjöstedt, meteorologist at SVT, said it struck very quickly. The highest recorded wind speed was 24 metres per second at Uppsala airport.

Emergency services were called to Vasaparken and Uppsala central station. A large branch remained across the tracks on Wednesday morning and staff from Uppsala municipality began clearance work.

An estimated three tons of trees and branches fell during the storm. No weather warning was issued even though the storm was visible on radar.
