Superstore's original title was The Greatest Love Story Ever Told

The NBC sitcom Superstore almost launched under a dramatically different name that highlighted its romantic elements. Creator Justin Spitzer revealed the original title during a 2019 San Diego Comic-Con panel, but network executives changed it amid a string of failed romantic comedies. The decision shaped the show's identity as a workplace comedy.

Background on the Title Change

Superstore, the six-season NBC sitcom created by Justin Spitzer, follows the daily lives of employees at the fictional Cloud 9 big-box retail chain. During a 2019 San Diego Comic-Con panel, Spitzer shared that the show was initially titled "The Greatest Love Story Ever Told." He emphasized, "It's not a joke. That was the original title of 'Superstore.'" The panel included cast members like Ben Feldman, who plays Jonah Simms.

NBC initially greenlit the romantic-sounding title but reversed course after several romantic comedies underperformed. Spitzer noted that shows like "A to Z," starring Feldman and Cristin Milioti, along with "Selfie" and "Love Bites," were canceled after short runs in 2014. Executives then suggested the simpler "Superstore," which stuck and defined the series' focus on workplace dynamics.

The Role of Romance in Superstore

Despite the title shift, romance plays a key part in the narrative. The central storyline revolves around the "will they, won't they" tension between Jonah Simms and associate floor supervisor Amy Sosa, played by America Ferrera. Their relationship faces hurdles, including Amy's marriage and child with Adam Dubanowski (Ryan Gaul). They share a kiss during a Season 2 tornado but only officially couple up in Season 3, amid complications like Amy's pregnancy.

The pair breaks up in Season 5 when Amy accepts a corporate job in California, but a flash-forward in the series finale shows them reunited, raising a family. Other relationships, such as Cheyenne Taylor Lee's marriage to Bo Thompson and Dina Fox's romance with Garrett McNeill, add layers to the ensemble.

At its heart, Superstore balances romantic and platonic bonds, culminating in a group barbecue that underscores community. The show, which aired from 2015 to 2021, is now streaming on Hulu.
