Tesla has begun offering a 30-day free trial of Full Self-Driving (Supervised) version 14.2 to eligible owners in North America. The trial targets vehicles equipped with Hardware 4 and is available across models including the Model S, Model 3, Model X, Model Y, and Cybertruck. Owners who haven't purchased FSD will receive notifications via email and the Tesla app to start the trial upon software installation.
Tesla's latest initiative provides a free 30-day trial of FSD (Supervised) v14.2, rolling out to North American customers with HW4-equipped vehicles. This marks the third such trial accompanying major FSD releases, following versions 12 and 13, aimed at giving owners another opportunity to experience the software's advancements.
Eligible participants include approximately 1.5 million Tesla owners who have not purchased FSD outright. The trial applies to Model S, Model 3, Model X, Model Y, and Cybertruck vehicles in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Puerto Rico. To participate, vehicles must install software version 14.2 or later, specifically updates 2025.38.9.5 for v14.2 or 2025.38.9.6 for v14.2.1, which arrive via over-the-air updates. Owners are advised to keep their vehicles connected to Wi-Fi for prompt installation.
Notifications arrive through email or the Tesla app, granting immediate access upon update. The trial cannot be deferred and begins automatically once the software is installed, lasting 30 days unless Tesla ends it earlier. If a vehicle enters service for more than one day during the trial, the period pauses, ensuring the full 30 days of access.
FSD v14.2.1 introduces a minor update noted in release notes: “Camera visibility can lead to increased attention monitoring sensitivity.” For existing FSD subscribers, it remains unclear if an additional free month is offered this time. The trial highlights Tesla's strategy to encourage adoption by allowing users to retry the software, potentially converting past skeptics into paying customers.
