The win moved The Bay into fourth place in the standings, while New York dropped to fifth with a 1-2-0 record. Atlanta Drive GC clinched a playoff spot as a result of the outcome.
In a match with high stakes for postseason positioning, The Bay Golf Club rallied in the singles to defeat New York Golf Club 5-3 on Monday at SoFi Center. Facing potential elimination with a loss, The Bay built an early lead in triples and held on through tense moments to remain on the right side of the playoff bubble.
The triples portion saw The Bay jump to a 3-0 advantage after three holes. Shane Lowry sank an 11-foot birdie putt on the first hole, "Flex," for a 1-0 lead. On the second hole, "Sterling," New York declined a Hammer throw, allowing Ludvig Åberg an 11-foot eagle opportunity, extending the lead to 2-0. Åberg followed with another birdie on the third hole for the 3-0 edge.
New York responded, scoring on their team hole "Big Apple" at No. 4 to make it 3-1, and conceded a point at No. 8 to close to 3-2. Rickie Fowler's nine-foot par putt at the ninth secured a tie, keeping the score at 3-2 entering singles.
In singles, Xander Schauffele and Åberg traded birdies for a tie at the 10th. New York leveled at 3-3 on the 11th when Wyndham Clark struggled and Matt Fitzpatrick made par. The Bay reclaimed the lead at No. 13, "Alpine," going up 4-3, and Clark added a point at No. 14, "The Last Toll," with a seven-foot birdie after New York declined another Hammer. Lowry tied the final hole, "Stone & Steeple," to seal the win.
Key incidents included a video review nullifying a Hammer throw at No. 13, as Schauffele had addressed the ball, and Clark's tee shot on the par-4 "Stinger" hitting overhanging rocks into the water, costing The Bay the hole.
Wyndham Clark commented, “The ball never lies,” after Schauffele's bunker mishap following the invalid Hammer. Rickie Fowler noted for New York, "We got behind the 8-ball early and had a couple opportunities we weren't able to take advantage of."
The victory guaranteed Atlanta Drive GC a playoff spot after their earlier win over Boston. New York faces Boston at 9 p.m. ET in the doubleheader's second match, while The Bay concludes the regular season against Jupiter Links Golf Club next Tuesday.
