The Japan Times wins silver at WAN-IFRA Asian Media Awards for climate reporting

The Japan Times has won silver in the Best Climate Impact Reporting category at the WAN-IFRA Asian Media Awards 2025 for its Boiling Point series. The series seeks to raise awareness of climate change's effects on rising temperatures in Japan. The awards were presented on November 5 in Singapore.

The Japan Times, Ltd. (Chairperson, Publisher and President: Minako Suematsu) received the inaugural silver award for Best Climate Impact Reporting at the 24th WAN-IFRA Asian Media Awards held in Singapore on November 5 for its Boiling Point series. The series aims to raise awareness of climate change's impact on rising temperatures and establish groundwork for the newspaper's enhanced heat coverage in the future.

The Best Climate Impact Reporting category recognizes journalism that explores the effects of climate change on lives, economies, ecosystems, or policy, while informing audiences, resonating with them, and inspiring action. Managing Editor Mark Thompson said, “We are extremely proud that our Boiling Point project has been recognized by WAN-IFRA. Involving a range of writers and editors, Boiling Point led us to explore the myriad ways in which rising temperatures are affecting our lives in Japan. The project, carried out over a series of months, not only brought attention to an extremely relevant topic, but it was also a learning experience for us and illustrated the strengths of our newsroom. It also had a knock-on effect in how we approach climate reporting moving forward. Hopefully, the results encourage our readers to seriously consider the importance of this issue and its impact on future generations.”

WAN-IFRA is a nonprofit, nongovernmental organization representing the world's press, with a global network of 3,000 news publishing companies and technology entrepreneurs, and 60 member publisher associations spanning 18,000 publications in 120 countries.
