The Rookie spinoff starts filming in Metro Vancouver

Production on The Rookie: North, a new spinoff of the popular ABC series, begins in Metro Vancouver on February 24. Starring Jay Ellis as the oldest rookie officer, the pilot episode will use British Columbia locations to depict Washington State. This marks another busy period for film and TV shoots in the region.

The Rookie: North is the latest addition to the expanding universe of the Nathan Fillion-led series The Rookie. Set to start filming on Tuesday, February 24, in Metro Vancouver, the pilot follows Alex Holland, played by Jay Ellis, who joins the Pierce County Police Department as its oldest rookie following a violent home invasion.

Ellis announced his involvement on Instagram, expressing gratitude to executive producers Alexi Hawley and Fillion. In his post, he wrote: “Yes, I’m the newest officer. No, I still don’t know where my locker is.” He added a humorous note: “And also does anyone know where I can get bulk ice for my soon to be daily ice bath for my knees and back?”

The storyline echoes the original The Rookie, which draws from the real-life experience of an LAPD officer who joined the force in his mid-40s after a bank robbery incident. Vancouver and British Columbia will substitute for Washington State in the production.

Fillion welcomed Ellis to the project, stating: “…and the Rookie-verse grows. Welcome, Mr. Ellis! You’re gonna love this ride!” The original series is currently in its eighth season and achieved its highest ratings in 2025, ranking 10th in viewership.

This spinoff arrives amid a surge of productions in Hollywood North, including Disney's Coven Academy and the second season of Shogun.
