Toluca draws goalless with Atlas and loses Apertura 2025 lead

Toluca drew 0-0 with Atlas in matchday 16 of the Apertura 2025, costing them the top spot in the standings. The Red Devils dominated but failed to score, hampered by Alexis Vega's injury absence. Atlas salvaged a crucial point in their Play-In push.

The match took place on November 1, 2025, at Estadio Jalisco, Atlas's home ground, kicking off at 17:00. Toluca, coached by Antonio Mohamed, lined up with Luis García in goal; Bruno Méndez, Tiago Pereira, Brian Gallardo, Everardo López in defense; Claudio Romero, Nicolás Castro, Jean Meneses (though the reported starting XI was García, Mendez, Pereira, Gallardo, López, Romero, Castro, Angulo, Ruiz, Simon and Paulinho), Marcel Ruiz, Paulinho and others. Atlas, led by Diego Cocca, fielded Camilo Vargas; G. Ferrareis, Aldo Mora, Matheus Doria, Carlos Aguirre in defense; Aldo Rocha, José Ramírez, Paulo González, Sergio Hernández, Mateo García and Uros Durdevic.

From the start, Toluca held over 60% possession and created multiple chances. In the 6th minute, Nicolás Castro shot from long range, but Vargas deflected it. Paulinho hit the post at 64' and Castro missed point-blank at 67', stopped again by the goalkeeper. Atlas held firm, with a crossed shot from Paulo González at 77' and a strike from Diego González at 89' deflected by Méndez.

No goals ensued despite Toluca's seven corners and several fouls that heated tempers, with yellow cards to Marcel Ruiz (40') and Matheus Doria (76'). The absence of Alexis Vega, sidelined by a grade II left thigh muscle strain from the previous match against Pachuca in matchday 15, hurt the attack, where Vega led in assists. Toluca fielded youngsters to meet sub-23 minute regulations but risks a three-point deduction, though it won't impact direct Liguilla qualification.

With the draw, Toluca has 34 points and drops to second after Cruz Azul's win over Puebla. Atlas reaches 17 points, tied with Santos in 11th, keeping their Play-In hopes alive. Toluca will close the regular season hosting América on November 8 at 19:00; Atlas visits Tijuana on November 7 at 20:00.
