Two large transatlantic ships, set to house about 5,000 COP30 participants, are due to arrive in Belém around 9 a.m. on Tuesday. The ships departed from Spain between October 25 and 29 and will dock 20 kilometers from the conference venue. President Lula inaugurated the docking port over the weekend.
The COP30, the UN conference on climate change, will take place at Parque da Cidade in Belém, capital of Pará, from November 10 to 21, 2025. To address housing demand, the Brazilian government has brought in two transatlantic ships as a temporary solution. These sea giants departed from Las Palmas and Barcelona, Spain, on October 25 and 29, respectively. One ship flies the Italian flag, the other Maltese.
They will dock at the port recently inaugurated by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, alongside Minister Jader Filho and Governor Helder Barbalho. The location is 20 kilometers from Parque da Cidade, easing access for participants. This measure aims to accommodate about 5,000 people during the event, which will gather delegations from various countries to discuss actions against climate change.
The ships' arrival comes amid intense preparations for the conference, including a leaders' summit on November 6 and 7, with heads of state present. The transatlantic initiative addresses the housing crisis in Belém, where hotel prices had previously surged, though they have recently dropped.
