Uniper rejects new reactors at Barsebäck

German company Uniper, owner of Barsebäck, has rejected an application to build two new boiling water reactors at the site. The application comes from Nordic Baseload Power which is also seeking government support.

Uniper has stated that it will not lease land for the project. Communications director Roger Strandahl told Dagens Industri that Uniper has nothing to do with the new project.

Nordic Baseload Power aims for the first reactor to be operational before 2035, provided permits are granted by 2029. The two reactors together would produce about 20 terawatt hours of electricity annually.

Local politicians in Kävlinge have reacted to the news. The Centre Party’s Stina Larsson criticised both the application and the company’s background while the Moderates’ AnnSofie Thuresson referred to previous dialogues about the site.
