West Bengal police have reopened 59 older cases and registered 181 new FIRs connected to the 2021 Assembly election violence. The action forms part of a wider crackdown on alleged irregularities involving Trinamool Congress leaders.
On May 18, 2026, West Bengal police issued a statement detailing the steps taken so far. They have started 458 new enquiries, registered 181 fresh FIRs and reopened 59 cases that had previously been closed with final reports.
Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari also announced two new committees during his cabinet meeting. One committee, headed by retired Justice Biswajit Basu and IPS officer K. Jayaraman, will examine institutional corruption. The second, led by retired Justice Samapti Chattopadhyay and IPS officer Dyamanti Sen, will look into atrocities against women and girl children. Work on both panels is scheduled to begin on June 1.
Several arrests took place the same day. Police detained Arghya Mondal, son of TMC MLA Dilip Mondal, along with four others in South 24 Parganas on charges of financial irregularities. In Durgapur, block president Satadip Ghatak and former MLA Malay Ghatak’s aide Raju Ahluwalia were taken into custody over post-poll violence and extortion allegations. Two TMC councillors and a zonal chairman from Hooghly were also arrested.
