Writers explain delay of Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse

The third installment in the Spider-Verse trilogy, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, has been delayed to June 2027, extending the wait for fans following the cliffhanger in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Producers and writers Phil Lord and Chris Miller provided insight into the decision during an interview with Gizmodo. They emphasized the need to craft a complete narrative arc for the film.

The Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse project faced a significant postponement after initial plans set its release for 2024. Reports of challenging working conditions during the production of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse contributed to the shift, resulting in a new premiere date of June 2027. This means audiences will wait four years from the release of Across the Spider-Verse to see the resolution of its ending.

Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who serve as producers and writers for the franchise, discussed the development process. Miller explained that the story originally formed one large film but was divided into two parts. He noted, “At one point it was one movie, but there was too much movie there, so it was separated into two. But then once you looked at that second half of a movie, you’re like, ‘Well, that’s like not just a story arc that has a beginning, middle, and end.’"

Lord added context on refining the plot, stating, “We know where it’s headed, but we need to understand better what’s happening in the middle. And we came upon a really wonderful notion, which is when your family is broken apart by your calling, your talents, how do you put them back together? How do you have it all?”

The delay allows the team to ensure Beyond the Spider-Verse delivers a self-contained story with a clear beginning, middle, and end, despite being part of the trilogy. The series, known for its innovative animation and emotional depth, centers on Miles Morales navigating multiverse challenges. In Across the Spider-Verse, Miles discovers he was not meant to become a Spider-Person, learns of his father's impending death, and ends up captured in the wrong dimension after trying to fix events. The villain Spot also arises due to Miles' unintended powers, heightening his sense of responsibility.

Family themes run throughout the films, encompassing Miles' relationships with his parents and the Spider-People he encounters. Beyond the Spider-Verse will explore Miles' efforts to mend these bonds amid adversity, aiming to conclude the trilogy on a strong note.

Destin Daniel Cretton, director of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, has shared initial details about the upcoming film's storyline. The movie will pick up emotionally from the events of 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home, exploring a relatable phase in Peter Parker's life. Tom Holland returns as the web-slinger in the sequel, set for release on July 31, 2026.

Sony's decision to withhold the first trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day, slated for a July 2026 release, mirrors the marketing playbook from Spider-Man: No Way Home in 2021. This approach aims to heighten anticipation for Tom Holland's fourth solo film, which features cameos from Mark Ruffalo as Hulk and Jon Bernthal as Punisher. The strategy avoids clashing with the intensive promotion of Avengers: Doomsday, another major MCU entry later that year.
