The University of Maiduguri marked its 50th anniversary with significant support from regional leaders and philanthropists. Borno State Governor Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum announced the award of scholarships to 200 lecturers at the university, enabling them to pursue further studies. This initiative aims to enhance academic capacity at the institution, which has been a key educational hub in northern Nigeria since its founding in 1975.

In addition to the scholarships, governors from the North East region, along with businessman Mohammed Indimi, contributed a total of N3.8 billion towards UNIMAID's development. These funds are expected to bolster infrastructure and research efforts at the university, which has faced challenges including security issues in the region due to insurgency. The donations underscore the commitment of regional stakeholders to strengthening higher education in Borno and surrounding states.
