Alcalá de Henares city hall has activated its water reserves following a breakdown in a valve on the main supply network in Yunquera de Henares, Guadalajara. The incident, now repaired, affects 44 municipalities and may cause supply interruptions for several hours. Cistern trucks and bottled water have been provided for residents.
A breakdown in a valve on the Mancomunidad de Aguas del Sorbe (MAS) main network in Yunquera de Henares, Guadalajara, has disrupted water supply to Alcalá de Henares and 43 Guadalajara municipalities. The MAS reported the issue on the night of Monday, April 13, and confirmed its repair on the afternoon of Tuesday, April 14. Mayor Judith Piquet stated that, as the farthest downstream municipality, "it will take some hours to restore the service".
City hall has tapped reserve tanks and coordinated emergency measures. The Canal de Isabel II has supplied cistern trucks to municipal boards in Districts II, III, IV, and V, where residents must bring their own containers once arrival is confirmed. Protección Civil has distributed pallets of garrafones at Francisco de Vitoria street and Pablo Picasso school, delivering over 1,000 garrafones to residences, health centers, and schools.
Public sports centers have suspended showers and water-related services, advising to postpone activities. MAS vice president Juan Carlos Martín called the incident "a wake-up call" and noted the 55-year-old valve had rusty bolts. He added that "the supply is being restored progressively" and called for renewing the primary pipeline.
City hall urges responsible water use and keeping home reserves during the gradual service recovery.
