Alexandra Eala has withdrawn from doubles at the Mubadala Citi DC Open to focus on her singles campaign. The Filipino player addressed the decision a day after Venus Williams confirmed the split.
Eala and Williams had planned to compete together in Washington after winning a doubles match at the Bad Homburg Open earlier this year. Eala said the choice came after a demanding grass-court season that left her physically and emotionally drained.
She posted a strong grass-court record of 12 wins and four losses, including the W125 title in Birmingham, a Berlin semifinal, and a third-round win over Iga Swiatek at Wimbledon. Eala will open her hard-court swing against Zheng Qinwen in the first round.
Williams has teamed up with Diana Shnaider for the doubles draw. Eala, currently ranked No. 28, enters the tournament with limited points to defend and aims for deeper runs on the hard courts.
