Annecy 2026 selects Brazilian film for Contrechamp

The Annecy International Animation Film Festival announced on Tuesday (28) the lineup for its 2026 edition, set for June 21-27 in France. Among the selections is the Brazilian film 'O Filho da Puta', directed by Érica Maradona, Otto Guerra, Tania Anaya, and Sávio Leite, in the Contrechamp section.

The festival, regarded as the premier event for animation, features 11 feature films in the main competition and 11 in Contrechamp, the latter focused on more authorial and experimental works. In total, 26 nations are represented in the feature lineup, with France involved in six main competition entries and increased presence from Asian and American countries.

Main competition highlights include 'Viva Carmen!' by Sébastien Laudenbach, who won the 2023 Annecy Cristal for 'Chicken for Linda!', and 'In Waves', an adaptation of A. J. Dungo's comics directed by Phuong Mai Nguyen. The opening will feature the new Minions film.

Brazil appears in Contrechamp with 'O Filho da Puta', a bold-language production serving as a showcase for the international circuit. Other section titles come from the Philippines, Japan, and France.

The edition will also include tributes, such as the 50th anniversary of British studio Aardman Animations. Brad Bird will preview 'Ray Gunn', Travis Knight will show footage from 'Wildwood', and Ricky Gervais will lead a masterclass on adult animation.

They are Amarga Navidad by Pedro Almodóvar, El ser querido by Rodrigo Sorogoyen, and La bola negra by Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi (Los Javis). Thierry Frémaux, the festival's general delegate, made the announcement.

Organizers announced nine Korean works have been officially invited to the Avignon Festival in France this July, marking the first time Korean productions receive such an invitation to one of the world's most prestigious annual performing arts festivals.
