GM Arjun Erigaisi defeated GM Hans Niemann in round three of the 2026 Quantbox Chennai Grand Masters. The win made him the first player besides leader GM Alireza Firouzja to record a victory in the event.
Arjun played the Catalan Opening and navigated a complex middlegame. Niemann offered a queen sacrifice that Arjun accepted to emerge a pawn ahead with strong winning chances.
Firouzja drew with GM Nihal Sarin to stay half a point clear. GM Nodirbek Abdusattorov drew with GM Pranesh M while world champion GM Gukesh Dommaraju drew with GM Dmitry Andreikin.
Round four is scheduled to begin on Sunday, July 19 at 5:30 a.m. ET. Arjun will have the white pieces against Pranesh while Firouzja faces Niemann with black.
