Army Guardsman pleads guilty to second-degree murder

A U.S. Army National Guardsman pleaded guilty last week to second-degree murder for fatally shooting another soldier at Fort Gordon Army base in Georgia. Natravien Landry, 27, admitted to killing Sgt. Andre S. Stewart Jr. during a confrontation at an apartment on the base. The plea came more than a year after the December 2024 incident.

The shooting occurred around 7:30 a.m. on Dec. 14, 2024, at an apartment complex on the base in Augusta. Landry, who had just returned from drill duty, entered the home and found Stewart in bed with his ex-girlfriend. He struck Stewart four times with a gun before shooting him, according to court records.

Stewart stumbled from the bedroom and fell down the stairs. Paramedics took him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Landry fled but was later stopped in a traffic stop and arrested. He had thrown the gun out the car window during the stop.

Landry faces up to life in prison and must serve at least 10 years. A sentencing date has not been set. Stewart's sister described the killing as a "vicious murder" in a GoFundMe post and noted that Stewart left behind a 5-year-old son who was in the apartment at the time.

Prosecutors in Florida have upgraded charges against former Brevard County sheriff's deputy Andrew Lawson to second-degree murder in the 2022 fatal shooting of his roommate, Austin Walsh. Lawson, 26, had previously sought to plead guilty to manslaughter, but a judge rejected the deal. The new charge, filed on April 17, could lead to a life sentence if convicted.

An 18-year-old South Carolina man pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter in the shooting death of his uncle last year. Damarion Nealy, who was 17 at the time, received a sentence of no more than five years under the youthful offender act.
