ATP proposes cuts to doubles draws and prize money

The ATP is considering significant reductions to men's doubles events starting in 2028 as part of an internal review called Product 28.

Plans include shrinking Masters 1000 doubles fields from 32 to 16 pairs and ATP 500 and 250 draws from 16 to eight pairs. Prize money for doubles could also be reduced under a possible shift from the current 80-20 split favoring singles.

The proposals were first shown to the ATP Player Council two months ago in Rome and discussed further by doubles players at Wimbledon this week. The ATP said it is reviewing draw sizes and compensation to build a sustainable model while keeping doubles on the tour.

Doubles specialists including defending Wimbledon champions Julian Cash and Lloyd Glasspool face uncertainty if the changes are adopted. The ATP has not finalized any numbers and said further talks with players, tournaments, and its board will take place.

The ATP Tour's reshaped 2026 calendar has removed the Hellenic Championship, a beloved event for Novak Djokovic and Stan Wawrinka. The tournament, relocated to Athens last year, will not return, leaving a gap before the ATP Finals. Players have voiced concerns over the evolving schedule amid plans for new high-level events.

Top players including Aryna Sabalenka have signaled growing frustration with Grand Slam tournaments over prize money and governance. Speaking at the Italian Open, Sabalenka stated that a boycott could occur at some point. The comments come just over two weeks before the French Open amid recent prize adjustments that players have largely dismissed.
