Berlin celebrates first hip-hop ball at city hall

Berlin's governing mayor Kai Wegner hosted the city's first Hip-Hop Ball at the Rotes Rathaus. The event blends opera ball glamour with urban culture's casual vibe. Guests wore floor-length gowns and suits, but sneakers were mandatory.

The event took place in Berlin for the first time, following several editions in Vienna. Organizer Sajeh Tavassoli aimed to bridge tradition and modernity. "If you grow up in Vienna, you can't avoid the ball tradition," she told RBB. "She didn't really feel at home in it. Hip-hop, on the other hand, helped her through many difficult times."

The Hip-Hop Ball was first held in Austria in 2016. It now debuted in the German capital. "Berlin is my new home," Tavassoli emphasized. Guests celebrated in multiple halls at the Rotes Rathaus. The program featured a reinterpreted Viennese waltz along with graffiti art, breakdance, and DJs. Tickets started at 150 euros.

The dress code required formal wear paired with sneakers to merge elegance and street style. CDU's Wegner welcomed attendees to highlight urban culture.
