Cardinals extend manager Oliver Marmol through 2028

The St. Louis Cardinals have signed manager Oliver Marmol to a contract extension through the 2028 season, with a club option for 2029. The announcement came on Sunday in Jupiter, Florida, ahead of a spring training game against the Pirates. Marmol, who has led the team since 2022, expressed excitement about guiding a younger roster in the upcoming rebuilding year.

Oliver Marmol, 39, has managed the St. Louis Cardinals since 2022, posting a 325-323 record over three full seasons. In his first year, the team won the National League Central and made a postseason appearance in the wild-card round. However, they finished 78-84 in 2025 and have missed the playoffs in the last three years.

The extension provides stability during a rebuilding phase. The Cardinals traded veterans including Nolan Arenado, Willson Contreras, Sonny Gray, and Brendan Donovan for prospects during the offseason. Among the acquisitions are right-handers Richard Fitts and Hunter Dobbins from the Boston Red Sox, who could join the Opening Day roster on March 26 against the Tampa Bay Rays at Busch Stadium.

Marmol is in his 20th season with the Cardinals organization. He began as a minor league player in 2007, managed in the minors from 2012 to 2016—leading teams to the postseason in four of those years—and joined the major league coaching staff in 2017 as first-base coach under Mike Matheny, later becoming bench coach under Mike Shildt in 2019.

Principal owner Bill DeWitt Jr. praised Marmol's understanding of the organization and his solid game management. “He has run with it. He has done a great job,” DeWitt said. “He is really solid when it runs a game and has the support of the players.”

President of baseball operations Chaim Bloom highlighted Marmol's commitment to growth. “He understands what makes this organization special,” Bloom said. “He is a Cardinal through and through. He also understands that a part of what makes this organization great is competing relentlessly.”

At the press conference, attended by players and staff, Marmol voiced enthusiasm for the younger group, including Masyn Winn and Alec Burleson. “I’m more excited about this upcoming year than any other year that I’ve been part of this organization,” he said. “You actually get to build it with them.”
