Chinese defence firms hint at new sniper rifle range record

Two Chinese defence firms have issued cryptic statements suggesting their products may have set a new long-distance shooting record, though no details were provided.

On April 28, Chongqing Changjiang Electric Appliances Industries Group announced that an unspecified product had “successfully refreshed the world record for similar products” during a “specialised test”.

The next day, Hunan Huanan OptoElectronic Group said its product had been used in a “sniper-specific test” and had “again supported the system in refreshing a world record in the same field”. The firm praised the optic’s “sharp imaging” and “rock-solid optical axis”.

Last year, the same company reported that the CS/LR24 rifle hit five out of five targets at 3,017 metres using 8.6mm rounds, a calibre equivalent to the Western .338.

Commercial satellite images taken in May 2026 show what analysts describe as a full-scale mock-up resembling a U.S. Navy Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer at a remote test site in China’s Taklamakan Desert in Xinjiang. The target was first flagged publicly by Joseph Wu, co-founder of the Taiwan Defense Studies Initiative.
