Designers unveil costumes for David Lowery's Mother Mary

Costume designer Bina Daigeler and Iris van Herpen have detailed the wardrobe for David Lowery's film Mother Mary, starring Anne Hathaway as a pop star seeking a comeback. The outfits draw from pop icons like Beyoncé and Taylor Swift, while incorporating Christian symbolism through halo headpieces. A standout red organza gown by van Herpen symbolizes transcendence for Hathaway's character.

In Mother Mary, Anne Hathaway plays a fading pop star who enlists her estranged friend Sam, portrayed by Michaela Coel—a rising fashion designer—to create a stage dress that mends their rift. Daigeler, known for her work on Tár and Mulan, crafted looks reflecting lost fame in early scenes and vibrant prime in flashbacks. Flowing capes, crystal bodysuits, and halo-shaped headpieces nod to Christianity, inspired by Beyoncé's Renaissance tour, Taylor Swift, Dua Lipa, and 1980s Madonna, as well as designers Alexander McQueen and John Galliano. Daigeler said, “For me, it was about finding ways to bring the emotions out, and translate them to the costumes.” She added that many custom pieces did not make the final cut to ensure originality beyond real pop stars' signatures. The film's climax features a red draped-organza gown designed by van Herpen, envisioned by Lowery from the start after months of draping and plissé work. Van Herpen described it as “not really a dress in its physical form—it’s like a vessel or spirit,” embodying spiritual elevation and the color's ties to blood and the body's interior. Daigeler praised the piece for letting Hathaway's character “shine... from the inside out.” She also enjoyed collaborating with Coel on glamorous fabrics and embroideries. Hathaway performs original songs by Charli XCX and Jack Antonoff on the soundtrack.
