E-waste recycling programme launched in Mthatha

The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment launched an e-waste recycling pilot project in Mthatha on 24 May 2026. Deputy Minister Bernice Swarts encouraged residents to take broken electronics to buyback centres instead of storing them.

The launch event took place in Mthatha to support local recyclers who previously travelled long distances to sell waste in KwaZulu-Natal. The programme targets items such as refrigerators, televisions and microwaves.

Deputy Minister Bernice Swarts highlighted health risks from electronics containing lead and mercury. She urged residents to register at buyback centres using their South African identity documents.

Swarts said the centres would ensure items are not stolen and belong to the sellers. The initiative aims to boost township economies while promoting environmental sustainability.
