Egypt expands wastewater treatment network to 621 plants

Egypt has increased its wastewater treatment plants from 385 before 2014 to around 621 by June 2026. The expansion added 236 new facilities and raised daily capacity to about 19 million cubic metres.

The Ministry of Housing, Utilities and Urban Communities reported the growth as part of a strategy to reuse water resources and improve sanitation services. The additions include 47 tertiary treatment facilities.

Key projects feature the Abu Rawash Wastewater Treatment Plant in Giza. It serves around 9 million residents and ranks as the second-largest after the El-Gabal El-Asfar facility.

Another project is the Zagazig Wastewater Treatment Plant. Located in Zagazig, it has a design capacity of 160,000 cubic metres per day. Officials said ongoing investments aim to support agricultural and industrial needs while maximising use of limited water resources.
