On Friday, January 2, 2026, a major rescue operation began at Lake Opplimen in Leksand municipality, Dalarna, after an elderly man in his 80s was reported missing from a cross-country ski trip. He was reported missing around 4:30 p.m., after failing to return as expected.
Rescue services, police, and an ambulance helicopter searched the area from both land and air. Tracks led to a hole in the ice, where it is feared the man fell through and drowned. Attempts to approach the hole failed when the ice broke under rescuers' feet, highlighting the danger of the site.
Despite extensive efforts, the man has not been found. The case has been handed over to police divers, who will continue the search. Police spokesperson Sophia Jiglind stated: "We fear that the man has died." Relatives have been informed of the serious circumstances.
