F1 drivers to use LEGO minicars at British GP

Formula 1 drivers will ride in custom LEGO minicars during the drivers’ parade lap at this weekend’s British Grand Prix at Silverstone. The event builds on a similar stunt that went viral at last year’s Miami GP.

All 22 drivers will have individual minicars built from 28,000 LEGO bricks each. The vehicles were constructed by 20 designers and engineers over more than 6,400 hours at LEGO’s factory in the Czech Republic.

Each minicar weighs 280 kg, with 65 kg of that coming from the bricks, and can reach speeds of up to 25 km/h on standard go-kart wheels. The parade lap is set to begin at 1:30 pm BST, 90 minutes before the start of Sunday’s race.

Emily Prazer, Formula 1’s chief commercial officer, said the Miami event was “one of the most memorable and talked-about moments of the season.” Julia Goldin, LEGO Group chief product and marketing officer, added that the company wanted to “go even bigger than last year.”
