Fukushima firm advances drone logistics efforts

Eams Robotics in Fukushima Prefecture is working to implement drone logistics. Founded in 2016, the company began drone development in 2018. In 2022, it partnered with Sagawa Express and others to test deliveries to mountainous areas and remote islands.

Fukushima Prefecture was severely affected by the March 2011 earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear accident. In this context, Eams Robotics is utilizing the prefecture's industrial revitalization subsidies to advance drone applications in logistics. Based in the city of Minamisoma, the company produces and sells industrial drones.

Eams Robotics was established in 2016 initially as a firm related to aerial photography services for television broadcasters. It started developing and manufacturing drones in 2018. In 2022, the company partnered with firms including Sagawa Express to conduct tests for drone deliveries of parcels and food to mountainous areas and remote islands within and outside Fukushima.

These efforts support Fukushima's industrial recovery, demonstrating potential for drones to improve logistics in challenging terrains.

Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings unveiled a new robot arm on Wednesday for the project to remove nuclear fuel debris from its tsunami-crippled Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant. The 22-meter-long arm can grab debris from a wider area than the previously used fishing rod-like devices. Tepco plans to begin setting it up next month and start the third trial at the No. 2 reactor this autumn.
