Greenpeace México rejects megaplant of ammonia in Topolobampo

Greenpeace México expressed its rejection of the construction of a megaplant of ammonia in Topolobampo, Sinaloa, due to risks to the marine ecosystem and public health.

The organization issued a communiqué on July 24 in which it joined indigenous Mayo-Yoreme communities and local collectives against the project of Gas y Petroquímica de Occidente, a subsidiary of Proman.

The project would produce up to 800 thousand tons annually of anhydrous ammonia and threatens Bahía de Ohuira, a Ramsar site home to whales, dolphins and other species.

Greenpeace sent letters to Proman executives and the bank KfW IPEX-Bank demanding a halt to the works. The company requested a meeting that will take place on July 27.

In addition, the NGO asked the Mexican Government to cancel the megaproject and stop fossil fuel infrastructures that affect the rights of indigenous peoples.
