Social media videos show Chamber president Hugo Motta being booed at a pre-Carnival event in João Pessoa. Part of the crowd chanted 'Out Hugo Motta' as he was greeted by the host. The lawmaker's press office states he was not at the party.
Videos circulating on social media captured the moment when Chamber of Deputies president Hugo Motta (Republicanos-PB) was booed during the Folia de Rua event, a pre-Carnival gathering held in João Pessoa, Paraíba, on Friday (February 6). As he was mentioned and greeted by the event host, part of the crowd chanted 'Out Hugo Motta' in unison.
According to the lawmaker's press office, Motta was not present at the venue. However, he allocated R$ 1 million in parliamentary amendments to sponsor the event, which may have linked him to the public backlash.
The incident comes amid political wear for Motta. At the end of 2024, the Chamber president faced criticism from party leaders and risked not being reelected. He struggled to balance demands from the right and left, and suffered damage from public stances on controversial bills, such as the Constitutional Amendment Proposal (PEC) on Shielding and the Dosing Law Project.
The booing reflects discontent from part of the Paraíba population with the deputy's performance, who took over as Chamber president in February 2024.
