On February 8, Zachary Olpin, 30, and Megan Olpin, 31, took their 7-year-old daughter to the East Idaho Aquarium in Idaho Falls, Idaho. Surveillance video captured the parents striking the child multiple times, dragging her around, and other abusive acts, according to court documents obtained by East Idaho News and Law&Crime review of Bonneville County records. Megan Olpin hit the girl with a shoe, knocking her down, while Zachary Olpin pushed her down repeatedly as she tried to stand. Video showed Zachary carrying the child and slamming her head against a wooden structure, then using his shoulder to force her head into a metal electrical box at least three times before they left the facility. The girl later told child advocates that her parents 'bonked' her on the head with a shoe and continued because they were mad at her. Zachary claimed the electrical box incident was an accident, and Megan admitted to one hit with a shoe and one with keys. The couple eventually acknowledged their behavior was out of line and wrote apology letters. Zachary faces one felony and one misdemeanor count of injury to a child. Megan is charged with felony aggravated battery, felony injury to a child, and misdemeanor injury to a child. The Idaho Falls Police Department arrested them, booking them into Bonneville County Jail. Preliminary hearings are scheduled for March 24.
