Japan deploys cameras in northern mountains amid rising bear attacks

Japan has started installing hundreds of cameras in its northern mountains to survey bear populations after a surge in attacks that have killed at least five people since April 1.

Authorities began the effort this week as part of a nationwide study, Environment Ministry official Yu Takahashi told AFP.

More than 800 cameras will first target six major bear populations in the Tohoku region before expanding across the country over the next four years. Jars of honey mixed with wine will lure bears so cameras can record their unique chest marks.

Bears have also caused a record 13 fatal attacks nationwide in the last fiscal year. The Environment Ministry links rising numbers to fewer residents in rural areas.

Officials advise people to avoid solo mountain trips, attach bells to bags and carry bear spray.
