Kalinga community launches Tiny Library project for 2027

A new community project in Magmag-an, Lubuagan, Kalinga plans to build the Tiny Library by 2027 to provide a space for reading and cultural showcasing. It builds on previous gift-giving activities for children in 2024 and 2025. The initiative aims to attract tourists and enhance local development.

In 2026, the community in Magmag-an, Upper Uma Lubuagan, Kalinga, advanced plans for the Tiny Library as a permanent project following successful gift-giving events providing school stationery in 2024 and wet weather gear in 2025. According to Joan Saga-oc, the concept originated before she wrote books on village life and folklore, which won awards in 2025 including the Carlos Palanca Memorial Award for best essay in English.

A suitable lot was secured in late 2024. A professional architect provided pro bono services for the design, incorporating traditional Kalinga style with a raised structure featuring two book storage sections at 45 degrees, a central kitchen/pantry and comfort room unit, and a front enclosed reading and visitor center overlooking the valley. Ideas include a sculpture or flower garden in front.

Fundraising will draw from book sales at the Philippine Book Fair 2026 from March 12 to 15, along with support from the book-loving community and public donations of books and art materials post-construction. Construction will prioritize local materials, labor, and skills to ensure sustainability and community benefit, avoiding cultural or environmental harm.

Saga-oc stated, “We want the Tiny Library to be useful beyond serving as a book repository...we can attract visitors and tourists to the village to bear witness to our own development ambitions.” The project seeks to highlight Kalinga hospitality and culture, enhancing the community's reputation as reliable and capable.
