Kenya Scouts Set Mangrove Planting World Record

The Kenya Scouts Association has set a new Guinness World Record for the largest simultaneous mangrove tree planting with 4,124 participants at the Jomvu Kuu Mangrove Site in Mombasa County.

The record attempt took place during World Mangrove Day celebrations in partnership with the Kenya Forest Service. Participants planted young native mangrove trees while leaving space for growth and avoiding machinery, meeting all Guinness World Records guidelines.

A Guinness World Records adjudicator confirmed the achievement after reviewing documentation and remotely witnessing the exercise. The effort exceeded the minimum requirement of 3,000 participants.

Forestry Cabinet Secretary Deborah Barasa congratulated those involved and noted that Kenya has restored 91.6 million mangroves in the last three years under President William Ruto. This represents more than 65 per cent of the ten-year target of 140 million mangroves under the 15 Billion Tree Growing Programme.

The initiative supports coastline protection, marine biodiversity, fisheries and carbon absorption as part of broader climate resilience efforts.
