Korumburra show introduces hobby horse race and pygmy goat events

The 130th Korumburra Show will feature a mix of traditional and new attractions over two days starting February 13. Highlights include a novel hobby horse race involving local businesses and a returning pygmy goat show with a junior costume section. Fireworks will cap off the opening night.

The annual Korumburra Show reaches its 130th edition, promising entertainment for locals and visitors on the evening of Friday, February 13, and all day Saturday. Opening night kicks off around 6pm with the debut Burra Bolt, a hobby horse race on the footy ground. Five entrants—Barry Plant Korumburra, Kelly’s Bakery, Korumburra Pony Club, Jumping Horse Club, and Adora Hair in Leongatha—each paid $150 to compete. Riders, dressed in racing silks, will navigate jumps and a sprint using hobby horses. The winner takes $500, with $250 going to the Korumburra A&P Society.

Following the race, Kirra Brauckmann, an expert hobby horse rider from the Mornington Peninsula, will showcase dressage and jumping skills. “She has a full tack box, four horses, a bridle for dressage and another for jumping; she’s going to be doing the dressage to music,” said Ms. Joyce, who organized a prior hobby horse event at the showgrounds. Her daughter, Tiffany, is handling this year's hobby horse activities.

At about 7pm, the pygmy goat show returns after last year's success, with more entrants expected. A new junior fancy dress section will see children and their goats in costumes. Ms. Joyce oversees this popular segment.

Saturday begins with a free farmers’ breakfast at 9:30am, sponsored by Coles, alongside market stalls and rides. Traditional elements include judging for cattle, sheep, poultry, and dogs in flyball events, plus displays in the Exhibit Pavilion. The Korumburra and District Historical Society and local library will present exhibits. Free children's entertainment is funded by stallholder fees. Fireworks light up the night on Friday.

Schedules are available at korumburrashowgrounds.com.au or from main street businesses.
