Light Phone III to support curated third-party apps

Light has announced a developer program for its minimalist Light Phone III, enabling the creation of non-commercial third-party tools. The initiative aims to expand the device's utility while preserving its distraction-free mission. Developers can access an SDK starting in June.

The Light Phone III, launched about a year ago, ships with a limited set of apps designed to help users avoid smartphone distractions. Light announced a new developer program that includes an SDK, a sharing platform, and tools like an open-source UI/UX library and emulator for testing without a physical device. The SDK will grant access to features such as push notifications and media files, with user permission required for privacy protection, according to the company's site. Light emphasizes that tools must serve a clear intentional purpose and fully respect user privacy. Each submission will be vetted and 'blessed by Light' for inclusion in the curated platform, avoiding commercial elements like subscriptions or in-app purchases. The SDK is scheduled to be ready for developers in June, with vetting of tools set to begin in August or September and the platform expected to launch for users by October. Owners of minimalist phones have long requested additional features like authenticator apps or public transit tools to enhance daily utility without succumbing to the attention economy, as noted in community discussions.
