London City Lionesses sign Alexia Putellas on free transfer

The London City Lionesses have completed the signing of two-time Ballon d’Or winner Alexia Putellas from Barcelona on a free transfer.

Putellas, who left Barcelona at the end of last season, joins after helping Spain win the 2023 World Cup and contributing to four Champions League titles during her 14 years there.

She said she was thrilled to start a new chapter with the club. Putellas added that its ambition and commitment to growing as a women-only independent club resonated with her, and she looked forward to working with owner Michele Kang on youth development.

Kang described the 32-year-old as embodying the pinnacle of talent in women’s football. She called the move a bold statement about the future of the sport and said it would help create new opportunities for female athletes.

London City finished sixth in their first WSL season after promotion. The club has also signed goalkeeper Mary Earps, defender Janni Thomsen and forward Nicole Anyomi this summer.
