Maharashtra to decide mayor reservations via lottery today

Maharashtra's 29 municipal corporations will decide mayor position reservations today, Thursday, at 11 AM through a lottery system. The Urban Development Department, headed by Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, will conduct the process. This will clarify which category will get the mayor's seat in cities like Mumbai, Pune, and Thane.

Following recent municipal elections in Maharashtra, attention is focused on the mayor positions across 29 corporations, including Mumbai's BMC. The mayor elections will be held through voting by councilors, but reservations must be decided first. The state's Urban Development Department will begin the lottery process today at 11 AM, chaired by State Minister Madhuri Misal.

Reservations rotate among general category, Scheduled Caste, OBC, and women. For instance, in BMC, the previous mayor was from the general category, so it is excluded from this lottery. Similarly, the category of the last mayor in other corporations will be omitted. This will determine whether the mayor is male or female, and from which caste or category.

Once reservations are set, special meetings will be called to elect the mayor and deputy mayor, possibly on January 28. Mumbai has 227 elected councilors, and the party with the majority typically secures the position. In BMC, Shiv Sena (Uddhav)'s Kishori Pednekar was the last mayor, but this time Mahayuti (Shinde-BJP) may benefit. Experts believe BJP could secure its first mayor in Mumbai.

The mayor's term is 2.5 years, while councilors serve five years. This process will usher in new dynamics in Maharashtra's local politics.

Voting began on Thursday across 29 municipal corporations in Maharashtra, with the spotlight on Mumbai's Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) where the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance faces a fierce battle from the reunited Thackeray cousins. A total of 3.48 crore voters will decide the fate of 15,931 candidates, including 1,700 vying for 227 BMC seats. Polling runs from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

The elections for Mumbai's Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) have been postponed once more. The city has operated without an elected mayor for nearly five years. A state-appointed administrator has led the BMC since March 2022, with polls now scheduled for January 15.

Mahayuti has secured a major victory in Maharashtra's BMC elections, paving the way for BJP's first mayor. Shiv Sena's 25-year stronghold has crumbled, and the Thackeray brothers' unity failed to sway voters. These results signal a significant shift in the state's urban politics.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has described the BJP's strong performance in local body elections as a trailer for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) polls due in January 2026. He attributed the results to public endorsement of the Mahayuti government's development model. Prime Minister Modi echoed that the outcome reflects trust in people-centric development.

Ahead of Mumbai civic polls, Uddhav Thackeray's Shiv Sena (UBT) and Raj Thackeray's MNS have agreed on seat sharing. Under the deal, Shiv Sena (UBT) will contest over 150 seats while MNS will field candidates on 60-70 seats. An official announcement is likely today.

In a joint rally in Mumbai, Raj and Uddhav Thackeray raised alarms about a potential Gujarati takeover of the city, accusing the BJP of using money and land to undermine Marathi identity. This comes days before the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation elections on January 15, 2026. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis dismissed the claims as a fake narrative.

Paris's municipal elections, scheduled for March 15 and 22, 2026, introduce a new voting system that breaks with tradition. Adopted in 2025 at the urging of Rachida Dati, the reform allows voters to cast separate ballots for their arrondissement and the central city hall. This change, amid the capital's other peculiarities, opens unexpected prospects in the race for City Hall.
